How Social Media Habits Affect Our Daily Life

 Special Article - Pooja Bohini

Social media is one of the most trending platforms in today’s world. It keeps us updated with news and events from across the globe. However, alongside its benefits, social media also has significant impacts on our daily lives.

From a student’s perspective, social media often acts as a major distraction. Instead of focusing on studies, many students spend excessive time creating reels, watching videos, or engaging online. This not only reduces their concentration but also affects their academic performance.

Similarly, office-going employees are also influenced. During commutes or free time, they often find themselves endlessly scrolling through social media. What begins as relaxation frequently turns into a habit that reduces productivity and focus at work. People across the age group of 18–60 are engaged in creating or consuming content, but very few reflect on how much time they may actually be wasting. Instead of channeling creativity solely into reels and blogs, individuals could utilize their skills in areas that foster long-term personal and professional growth.

Another concern is the lack of self-reflection. Out of 24 hours, after completing work, traveling, and daily responsibilities, the remaining free time is often consumed by mobile screens. Rather than using that time for self-analysis or skill-building, most people turn to social media as a quick escape. While it is true that some videos provide inspiration and life lessons, excessive use can affect one’s mindset, emotions, and lifestyle.

From my perspective as a counsellor, motivator, guide, and marketing student, I believe social media is neither entirely good nor entirely bad—it is neutral. The key lies in how we use it. Every individual should develop self-control and set boundaries on how much time they allocate to it. Parents also play an important role: instead of handing a phone to a crying child, they should engage with them through conversation and care. Human interaction is being replaced by digital interaction, which reduces emotional connection and creativity.

My advice is to use social media with purpose and in moderation. It offers valuable knowledge, inspiration, and networking opportunities—but only when used wisely. As I guide my students, I encourage them to focus on real-life examples, self-growth, and time management rather than over-reliance on digital content. By doing so, we can harness the positive side of social media without letting it control our lives.
